Women and tourism sector

Women represent the majority of the workforce around the world; however, they carry out activities with less remuneration and little recognition.

The travel and tourism sector provides nearly 330 million jobs around the world, in addition to contributing 10.3% to world GDP.

UNWTO, through its Department of Ethics, Culture and Social Responsibility, in collaboration with UN Women and various external allies around the world, has been working since 2007 to promote gender equality and women's empowerment through the application of policies associated with this matter in the tourism sector.

According to the Global Report on Women in Tourism – Second Edition published by the UNWTO; women represent 54% of the labor force in the tourism sector. In the year 2021, female empowerment and the opening of society have achieved more than 277 million jobs around the world, among which there are erroneously stereotyped jobs for women, which exposes a current scenario surrounded by inequalities in terms of racial, ethnic discrimination, sexual abuse, which have worsened after the global health crisis caused by COVID-19.

In Ecuador, tourism provides close to half a million of direct jobs and around 700 million dollars annually. In the context of women, tourism has also been a space for growth and development, providing opportunities in restaurant, hotel, and transportation positions, among others.

A clear example is the operation and intermediation sector where women predominate with 60%.

It should be noted that, in the last 20 years, Ecuador has made a huge leap in terms of the inclusion of women, the majority are entrepreneurs of small and medium-sized companies, but the challenges now focus on the narrow technological gap which prevents the development of high-level technical capacities in rural areas that position these groups in executive teams at a national and international level.

In conclusion, it is essential to develop the technical skills of women so that they can access positions that were previously denied to them, amply demonstrating their leadership abilities. From my personal perspective, the importance of their participation in the Ecuadorian context must be evaluated and their free access ensured. The knowledge of data under a gender approach in tourism will allow decision-making from the public to the private, thus complying with the premise of building a strong economy, based on a more just and balanced society.
